Chapter 2 · The Time Tetrad: the biggest mistake about productivity

Most people believe they need to manage time. But time cannot be controlled. What can be managed are our choices. We all have the same 24 hours; the difference lies in what we do with them.

The four dimensions of time

The Time Tetrad expands the Time Triad created by Brazilian expert Christian Barbosa by giving interruptions a dimension of their own:

  • Important: activities linked to the future, such as planning, learning, health and relationships.
  • Urgent: problems, crises, missed deadlines, fires to put out.
  • Circumstantial: activities that add little value.
  • Interruptive: distractions that hijack our attention.

The modern challenge

Today we compete against notifications, social media, instant messaging and information overload. Our greatest enemy is not a lack of time: it is fragmented attention.

In organizations and in personal life

Companies lose precious hours to interruptions and rework; public bodies suffer from red tape and constant urgencies. In personal life, the price often shows up as anxiety, exhaustion and a sense of getting nothing done. Protecting blocks of time for what is important is the decision that changes results.
